In Buddhist culture, Buddha is depicted as being both skinny and fat. The reason for him being skinny is, according to the legend, due to the fact that when he was younger his was royalty. He never knew what life was like outside until one day he left the comfort of his palace or castle and took a ride around the town and streets. What he saw changed his perspective and way of life. He saw extreme poverty, the sick, and people dying in the streets. He left his comfortable life style and went to live amongst the poor. It is said that due to extreme poverty and fasting in his new lifestyle, Buddha was so skinny that he could touch the front of his spine through his stomach. This is obviously impossible, but likely has some truth to it. He probably was very skinny, but not to that possible extent. That is why he is depicted as being extremely skinny. The reason he is sometimes depicted as being fat is that, quite simply, he believed that fat people were happy and content. I honestly prefer the depiction of him being fat.

I got this information from my brain. I remember all this information form 6th grade History.

I got an 11/20 on the online quiz.
